Are YOU ready for the DTV Cutover on February 17, 2009? Find out more about the
digital TV transition and if it affects you on this week’s “Product Spotlight” with
Rob Almanza. Chris Graveline joins us as well with his “tech history”.

The DTV cutover is coming soon … are YOU ready? Don’t wait until then to get YOUR digital TV converter. If all of your TVs are connected
to satellite or cable, then you’re all set. However, if you use an outside antenna or rabbit ears for ANY of your
televisions,
then you
need a digital converter box. Converter boxes have the power to convert your off-air TV into
digital
television.
A converter box takes
the new digital TV signals over the air and converts them to analog, so your old TV can show
them. Digital broadcasting
promises to
provide a clearer picture and more programming options and will
free up airwaves for use by emergency responders.
Let’s talk about a couple of our favorite converter boxes. The smallest with one of the best electronic program guides and
one-button
analog pass-through is the DTVpal from Dish Network. Analog pass-through means you can easily switch between digital and
analog
channels, between now and the DTV cutover in February. The DTVpal is available for 60 dollars. Therefore, with your $40 DTV
Government
Coupon,
you pay only 20 bucks. The DTVpal doesn’t take much space and was very easy to set-up.
We’ve also used the Magnavox TB100MW9. This unit has a simple programming guide and affordable. Walmart sells it under $50,
so with the coupon you would pay 10 bucks. This was the first converter box we used in our studio and had no problems with it.
However,
it doesn’t have the analog pass-through feature the DTVpal. Most of these units draw very little power and are designed to
automatically
turn off after an inactivity period. That makes them energy-saving. Don’t toss out your old rabbit ears! They and outdoor antennas will still work
with the DTV cutover. You just need a converter box between your antenna and your TV. For more information about the DTV transition,
